Improvements in radiation detection have open up new avenues in nuclear imaging, such as multimodal imaging systems, large axial fields of view for total-body positron emission tomography (PET), unconventional geometries for
organ-specific imaging or applications beyond diagnostics. In this talk, I will first review the basics of nuclear imaging techniques, including an introduction to the inverse problem of obtaining volumetric images from measurement data. Next, I will present selected examples of recent advances and applications, highlighting both new opportunities and challenges.
