NanoGUNE, the big challenge of the small

The book "NanoGUNE, txikiaren xarma" dealing with the setting-up and development of the CIC nanoGUNE research center from its very beginnings has just been presented this morning at nanoGUNE. The book sets out to explain to the general public how cutting-edge research is conducted in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. How does “the big challenge of the small” materialize on a day-to-day basis? How can a truly innovative, daring project come to fruition? The story answers this question.

NanoGUNE, the big challenge of the small

“NanoGUNE has succeeded in making a place for itself in the network of international science. When nanoGUNE was inaugurated in 2009, we were facing an enormous challenge, and today we are proud because that challenge is being met,” said Jose Maria Pitarke, nanoGUNE’s CEO.

“The book includes the testimonies of the researchers, technicians and other professionals who have been participants or players throughout this process, each one from his or her own activities and experiences, so a story full of nuances is woven, and at the same time a portrait is produced of the current solid reality that nanoGUNE has become,“ said Elixabete Garmendia, the author of the book.

It also “provides some keys for understanding the interconnected nature of science. For example, by posing ethical, responsible research, and by acknowledging the debt such a public project owes to society,” added Garmendia.

“It is a popularization book,“ they stressed, “which deals with the everyday side of research, and brings the distant, incomprehensible world of science closer to the general public”. The book has been published firstly in Basque and the plan is to publish it in Spanish and English as well.
