Social security affiliation number
When registering your contract at nanoGUNE, a Social Security affiliation number will be assigned to you. This number might be useful for other administrative procedures during your registration at a health care center.
The Social Security is made up of a series of public organizations directed at guaranteeing Spanish citizens and foreigners residing in our country with economic assistance and/or health care. The contribution to the maintenance of the system is done by both the employer and the worker, the later by way of an obligatory retention in the wages. This contribution to the maintenance of the Social-Security system, with a monthly maximum base, is oriented to cover common contingencies (common illnesses and professional illnesses/ailments, retirement, maternity, and high-risk pregnancies), professional training, and unemployment.

Osakidetza Health Card
To apply for a Personal Health Card of the Public Basque Health Service, named Osakidetza, you have to present the following documents at your nearest health center:
- Copy of identity card (NIE, passport, family record book or similar).
- Certificate of registration at the corresponding Town Hall Registry (no necessary if you have the foreign identity card).
- Certificate of registration at the Social Security. This document will be provided to you by nanoGUNE.
- The form P1 will be necessary (also in order to include the relatives). This document will be obtained and filled in the Social-Security National Institute www.seg-social.es.
You will obtain a temporary card. The final card will be sent to your address by post.

European Health Insurance Card - EHIC
It gives access, during a temporary stay, to health care with the same standards as received by the nationals of the European Union’s member states, the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is free and issued at any of the Social-Security Information Services (www.seg-social.es) of the Social-Security National Institute, with the identity card of each family member.

Mutual insurance companies
Mutual insurance companies are non-profit entities, authorized by the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs and collaborators of the Social Security, whose principal objective is to collaborate in the management of the Social Security by providing its members health care and economical coverage derived from occupational accidents and professional illnesses of the workers. They provide with the following services:
- Health Care and Financial Assistance, derived from occupational accidents.
- Financial Assistance derived from the temporary disability due to common illnesses.
Work accidents
Health care at nanoGUNE is provided by two different institutions.
- In the case of suffering a common illness or non-professional accident (events called Common Contingencies), medical assistance will be provided by the Social Security System (Osakidetza - Servicio Vasco de Salud).
- In the case of injuries or illnesses suffered by a professional accident, whether it be at work or at commutes to and from work (events named Occupational Accidents), health care will be provided by the Mutual Insurance Company Mutualia (www.mutualia.es) for Occupational Injuries. Approval for assistance is required from the Facilities Manager, Gorka Arregui or the Finance Director, Miren Alberdi.
