Ph.D Program
CIC nanoGUNE PhD program
CIC nanoGUNE is committed to profiling our PhD students with the best record in research and in science & industry soft skills. To support this, the nanoGUNE PhD program incorporates training courses and a mid-term update to all PhD students pursuing their studies in our institute.

Training on transversal skills: Three training courses are yearly offered in CIC nanoGUNE. Attendance to each of them (or to equivalent courses, somewhere else) before completing the PhD is important. The currently offered courses are:
- Communication Skills (specially oriented to first-year PhD students)
- Entrepreneurship and Creativity (specially oriented to second year PhD students)
- From PhD to Industry (specially oriented to third year PhD students
PhD students should register in the courses when the call for registration is launched, typically in October, planning their attendance to all before the completion of the PhD.

Mid-term update: With the goal of fostering a reflection point at the middle of their research work, PhD students are requested to perform a short update of their PhD activities, between months 15th and 20th of the PhD period. The mid-term update consists on the following sequential steps:
- Write a short report (4-pages maximum) summarizing their research project, including first results and outlook and prepare an updated CV
- Decide on two senior scientists or research fellows, send them the summary and CV, and make a date to have a short one-to-one conversation about the Ph.D. The selected senior scientists do not need to have a close scientific overlap with the activities of the Ph.D. student (even if it would be preferable that one of them does). In exceptional cases, scientists from outside nanoGUNE can be considered.
- Hold a 20 to 25 minutes seminar in nanoGUNE's standard seminar series, ideally, seeking a date to ensure the attendance of the two selected scientists.
PhD candidates will be reminded of the starting of the Mid-term update period on month 14th. They should update Itziar Otegui as each of these steps is fulfilled: i) communicate the scientists selected for the conversation, ii) send a copy of short report and CV, and iii) communicate dates of one-to-one conversations and seminar.
