Photonic monitoring of physiology
The Nanoengineering Group is working on the development of an optical sensor for real time monitoring of physiological parameters.
The photonic methods we are utilizing are near-infrared, Raman, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). To make weak signals visible and to detect extremely little variations in physiological conditions, we develop novel algorithms based on principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square (PLS) methods, support vector machines (SVM) and non-linear methods.
The superior goal is to implement an optical system for measuring continuosly and in a non-invasive manner different physiological parameters. In an advanced stage, the photonic system will be combined with sensing modules for vital signs to perform highly integrated multimodal diagnostics.
